Cigna quarterly net income up 36%

Cigna /quotes/comstock/13*!ci/quotes/nls/ci (CI 33.43, -0.41, -1.21%) said that its first-quarter net income rose to $283 million, or $1.02 a share, from $208 million, or 76 cents a share, in the year ago quarter. Revenue climbed to $5.2 billion, from $4.8 billion. Adjusted income from operations totaled $1.01 a share. Analysts had been expecting earnings of 89 cents a share, according to data compiled by FactSet. Cigna continues to estimate full year 2010 adjusted income from operations in a range of $3.75 to $4.15 a share. “Our first quarter 2010 results reflect strong earnings contributions from our ongoing operations, and demonstrate the overall strength of our diversified global health service businesses,” said CEO David Cordan
